Yes you can trade in person or p2p without an exchange. If you meet up with people you can trade physical dollars in a coffee shop or public place. I would say this is risky because you can be robbed, which is why people will rather go to exchanges where they don't have to leave house or meet strangers.

without going through exchange you can trade with some social media groups,telegram,brokers and many other.but i think exchanges are hassle free.take your own decision but careful about trustworthy.

of course yes, just find some one who is willing to buy or sell crypto..
then come up with the agreed price, you/he send the crypto, then you/he send the money.
but this is prone to scam so be careful.
also another thing you find a middleman (escrow) you both send funds to the escrow then escrow send the funds to both of you - middleman can charge small amount - you can find middle man in reputable sites like bitcointalk or can be an admin of this forum.

If trading cryptocurrency without exchanges is possible, but as you said, it has to be done with people you can trust, but I prefer to use simple swap to exchange one coin for another without registering an exchange.
