Bitcoin is the most popular currency because it was the first succesful attempt ever made to create a digital currency that combined traits as decentralization, security, safety of transactions through a robust network (the blockchain) that follows consensus rules with POW. Basically it cuts the middle-man, it provides the freedom to sent value everywhere in the world and in a small amount of time with a small amount of fees.
