I've signed my name in Electrum because it was blank before. I'm still trying to figure out if that would prove that it's yours. You could just sign funds with your name, but they aren't yours. It's a step in the right direction for knowing who the money belongs to. I was talking about using fingerprints to seal the crypto, but they haven't gotten around to it just yet.

In this post I’ll show you how to sign a message on the bitcoin blockchain. The process is more or less the same for the other coins.

To sign a message I am going to use the Electrum desktop light wallet. You can download it here.

Signing a message is important because you can use it as a proof of ownership of your funds, forum accounts or something else. By signing a message from an address you own and control, you make sure of that nobody can troll people for the things you didn’t do or say.

Here is how you do it,

Step 1:

Description: https://i.ibb.co/HCczN3M/1.png

Open electrum, click tools, from the menu click “sign/verify message”

Step 2:

Description: https://i.ibb.co/ZWysNZp/2.png

Fill the empty spots. Write a message about whatever you want to tell people. Write down your public address. (Only use the address that you own/control, otherwise it is not going to work!) Then click “Sign”

That’s it!

After you clicked “Sign” the program will generate your signature.

If you later click the “Verify” button, you’ll see a message “Signature Verified”

Description: https://i.ibb.co/ByB6g19/3.png

If you want to verify someone else’s message. You basically fill the empty spaces with the information s/he gave you and again you need to click “Verify” to see if  s/he is telling the truth or not.

I hope you'll find this information useful in someday.

Great job, but I think that in order to make the tutorial complete you should write details about signing if somebody has

* SegWit bc1* address

* SegWit compatible 3* address

Also some newbies may need explanations about the fact that although their wallet has a lot of addresses, they can sign only with one address (afaik).

@1millionClub Can you please explain what we should write in the signature box at the sign/verify message window? The one where there is a Message, Address and Signature, can it be anything or do I have to create a signature using a special program?

This topic was very helpful but I have a question. I usually write a memo in my fiat transactions so that the receiver of money can recognize me as the sender. I want to do this with my bitcoin transactions too. Is it possible to write a small text and explain in it the reason why you are sending money to someone? Are you only allowed to have a signature?

Sometimes this is really necessary because once I had a bad experience of sending a certain amount of bitcoin to a person. One day later another unknown person had sent him exactly the same amount like me! The receiver which was my friend didn't know which payment belongs to me. He had thought that I had sent him the money twice by mistake! If he could read a memo in which I had explained about my payment, he could easily recognize my transaction.

For special program. You can use :

1. Trezor

2. Ledger

3. Electrum Wallet

4. BrainWallet

5. Mycelium

For filling sign message, you only need to fill :

1. Message column

2. Address.

Signature code will created automatically.

To verify sign message, you must fill the message column, address and signature. and click verify.

Most of people sign messages with blockchain, they don't use Electrum. People using Electrum are advanced users, they don't need tutorials.

Even experimented users sometimes needs a tutorial. That 's how we can progress. I have a 8 gpu mining rig and I never used Electrum but i had it in the past. This post is interesting for me.
