Yes, the bitter truth is that as you say here, hackers attack large exchange companies.  You can imagine a big exchange being hacked.Most people in the world are involved with crypto and it is a very popular site that can never be a scam.

Crypto in it self is not scam. But it depends on what people use it for. If it is used in a scam site like HYIP then that is scam and if you also trade it in a scam site then it will also be considered scam. However if you use legit means to trade it it won't be a scam. This is the more reason why you should always give emphasis to research.
