There is a button if it is in black color means that you have already commented on this topic, and if it is in white color, then this means that you have never commented on it. This is a good option because when we click on unread comments it expose us to latest topics and we get a chance to comment first on it and first comment usually get more attention than other comments. As far as your problem is concerned ,I think there is some technical issue in site that's why you can't differentiate between unread and already commented topics.
