There is no doubt that practice make man perfect. But doing practice would be better if you have some knowledge and skills of that. And the knowledge and information definitely will be gotten from the theory. In my opinion theory and practice both are valuable. Both of these work side by side. You must gain appropriate knowledge then start practicing as a beginner. Eventually you will understand everything and gain experience by each passing day.
