Doge address starting with "9"?!

Recommended Posts

Hello Cryptotalk,

recently I was browsing the internet, finding the ways where can I grab some cryptocurrencies and made a few withdrawal requests on some websites. A few of them was using Dogecoin as a payment method. I received the payments in my wallet as usual, and the addresses started with D, just like mine. I suppose this is the only prefix Dogecoin addresses can have. But surprisingly, I also received Dogecoins from a weird address, that doesn't start with a capital D, but with the number 9.

I know Bitcoin has different types of addresses, such as P2PKH (starts with 1), P2SH (starts with 3) or Bech32 (starts with bc1), but I don't know anything about the formats of Dogecoin addresses.

Along with this strange starting letter, I found the address received 4,322,998,736 Dogecoins in total, which is almost 9 milion dollars according to the current Dogecoin price. The website I withdrew the funds from isn't so wealthy to get such an amount of Dogecoin, which is weird and I don't know how they got to the address. The address has
11,329 transactions which explains its big activity.

I would appreciate if anyone could answer my question, what is the format of this address and how is it possible for a DOGE address to have this prefix?

Well I can see the problem you are facing and I will take a deep look at it to help you find solution and reason in details of the format for doges coin prefix. Look Forward to my feedbacks later after my research.

@AkaCrafterCZ  Hello bro, it is simply a "multisig" adrress. There is nothing strange with it but I appreciate your curiousity, that's how we become better....

I noticed that each cryptocurrency has a prefix with its own address, for example, I have noticed that ethereum addresses begin with the letter A, but this is normal and it is not strange that this matter will promise that I will search more about this topic because I felt curious about this.

I got curious about this one as well. Care to explain how this 'multisig address' works?

And I think that address doesn't hold that much amount of Doges in it, just did some transactions totaling to that amount. There is that huge amount of Doges sent out too.

Yes, I also noticed that, there is just 36 thousand dogecoins there at the moment, but I don't get it how can they get so many dogecoins in total, as the website was a regular PTC website, that isn't that much popular and rich to collect 4 billions dogecoins.

@bitcoinb I would also appreciate if you could explain to us what multi signatures are, I already heard about it somewhere, but I didn't ever use it or find such an address.

From what I know, Ethereum addresses always start with 0x and then the rest of the address. I found some informations about it here: https://ethereum.stackexchange.com/questions/3542/how-are-ethereum-addresses-generated

@AkaCrafterCZ  I started to use crptocurrencies in 2014. In the past, I saw 1000 DOGE = $0.09 (equal $2 today). In the end of January 2017I, it was $0.20. If the website has been online for a few years, the amount in USD you calculated is a lot less in reality.

A "multisig" address is a "multi-signature" address, a kind of address more secure.... It is an address with several keys, unlike basic addresses. Companies can use this type of address to distribute power over several employees (for example 5). Multisignature can be used if at least three people are required to validate a transaction. An employee cannot transfer funds if 2 other employees have not validated (signed) it.

Wow thanks for the explanation, I really appreciate it. Now I found the real meaning of it. Does that mean I could prevent me from losing my funds if I leak my private key with the multi signature ability? They wouldn't be able to send the coins if i don't sign the transaction too, haha!

Just because it starts with D does not really matter that much as there is about 50 other characters

This comment is irrelevant.

The question is: Why this address is starting by "9" ?

The answer is: It start by "9" because it's a multisig address.

Thank you a lot of a great explanation because I have never heard of multi-signature address and I would probably not even try to understand such important thing.

Complications of trading network could be of this kind of issues which at times we have double or false counter transactions as from some site which I kind of saw some reviews which a user talked of their transactions I'd being quiet different from those which was on the Crypto wallet history of the very transactions

I see that it is already answered that it is a multi-sig wallet. I would just add that Doge multisig wallets are starting with either "A" or "9" and that this wallet probably belongs to an exchange or some whale that is concerned with having top security.

After some further investigation and research, I noticed it actually was a simple multi signature address, the reason I wasn't familiar with this is because I never worked with them and didn't have any reason why to try them. But after I read an article about it, it makes sense. Thank you @BTC Future, @bitcoinb for the explanation. I was missing this prefix part all the times.

Looking like multi-sig wallet address. I am noticing the same things for Litecoin deposit address on Trust wallet which is generally started with ltc. I am having an issue to receive payment to LTC address generated in Trust wallet as some exchange automatically cancels the transactions. If someone knows about this issue and have idea, highly appreciated.

The dogecoin address is: 9t4HBUT4km8LBtm8piHpKX3BJzQvYzZK4a

This is really strange because as I know dogecoin must start with "D" or any number following by "D" for example "3D... or 1D..." also it can be "9" but it was supposed to be Benet with "D" such as "9D" but I see this address is different.

@AkaCrafterCZ What happened to you, was part of a phishing attack to try to steal your wallet keys, password, seed phrase, etc. I was just reading an article yesterday about this scam hacking technique. Ive looked for the article in my history but I cant find it. If I find it later, Ill re-post it here.

From what I remember of the article. The hackers send out millions of transactions, of a low amount, to many different addresses. Not just Doge. If you follow back on the trans ID, you will a addy sending millions of transaction in short period of time. How they get your wallet addy or how they access your wallet, I dont remember. Sorry.

Maybe do a Google search for it.
