In my opinion investment is input and profit / loss is the output we get from investment. We invest money, shares, property to benefit. We invest our assets to be productive over time, we input our assets  and expect a return on this investment. For example, we launch some restaurant, which requires investment which is the input which will make it run successfully otherwise it will flop, so investment is a must for every business in the world.
