Tell us what wallet you are using. For Electrum there is a verification process but for other wallets you just have to be sure you downloaded from their websites. Also for the mobile wallets do the same, don't search for them in google apps but download from their website.

That's a fantastic question! I would say that it's best to ensure that the wallet belongs to a trustworthy institution, such as Coinbase. Some other high quality wallets include Free Ether Wallet and Blockchain's proprietary platform wallet. Both are typically highly recommended for novices.

Most especially, I always try to avoid new upcoming exchanges, untested with zero reputations. There has been much scam exit than cyber attacks of exchanges this year, it is so unpredictable to know those who are genue. I am not saying existing exchanges are 100% free from hacks but definitely more convincing.
