Usually you would get a negative ratings when your content was not useful, but if you what have said was true that you had follow the guidelines and make a useful post then I think there's someone who don't have anything else to do other than ruining someones reputation or it could also be because of someone who knew you that resent you.

Well to my own understanding, the reason why people gave negative reputation on someone post is,  if the post doesn't contain the standards that a post requires. Also if your post is not attractive for reders or doesn't make any much sense.

I think if someone doesn't like your comment or topic, if they find it not worthy they can give you negative reputation. So i suggest make sure your comment or topic is worthy enough and no one get bothered with your posts.That's how you can avoid negative reputation.
