Domain names and WHOIS?

Is hiding the identity of the domain name owner a paid feature? As far as I know, WHOIS used to be free. Or am I wrong? I wanted to use this service for my domains, but found that I have to pay for it.

This is usually all free. This is called "whois privacy", you can check it again more closely. This is usually free. In EU it should free for all, thanks GDPR. I have been using this service from the very beginning at the https://pananames.com/ registrar. I am using it for .com and .net domain zones. Which ones do you use?

Yes, and you can also check prices for domain name renewals, for example. Perhaps a different registrar will have these prices more favorable.
