Messi accepts cryptocurrency as a part of Paris Saint-Germain deal

Recommended Posts

The signing of soccer star Lionel Messi includes a fee in Paris Saint-Germain over a cryptocurrency bid for the French club, the international press agency said, within the latest major boost to the new digital asset. The 34-year-old Argentine left Spanish club Barcelona and signed a two-year contract with Qatar-owned Paris Saint-Germain, with an option for a 3rd year, on Tuesday.

In an exclusive report citing Paris Saint-Germain on Thursday, Reuters noted that the tokens were included in his "welcome package", which media reports estimated at between 25 and 30 million euros ($29-35 million). The club didn't disclose the share of PSG tokens within the package, but said the quantity was "significant". PSG tokens are a kind of cryptocurrency that permits holders to vote on mostly simple decisions associated with their club.

Among the clubs which will release the icons this year are English Premier League champions Manchester City and AC Milan of Italy. Former Barcelona club Messi launched a game last year. Clubs are increasingly watching tokens as a source of latest revenue, and Socios.com, which provides tokens for PSG and other major clubs, says the tokens have generated nearly $200 million for partner clubs in 2021, as PSG already saw revenue from the Messi deal.

Reuters added, "Like bitcoin and other digital currencies, fan tokens are often traded on exchanges. They also share a penchant for wild price swings with other cryptocurrencies, which has led some regulators to issue warnings to investors about digital assets."
